Painting is one of the main types of fine art; it is an artistic image of the objective world with colored paints on the surface.

Painting Types

  • Easel painting is mostly represented by works done with oil paints on canvas (cardboard, wooden boards or bare). It represents the most massive type of art.
  • Monumental painting is a technique of drawing on walls when decorating buildings and architectural elements in buildings. This technique of drawing has been well known since antiquity. Later, such a technique was used in the design of many Christian religious churches and their arches.
  • Decorative painting is a way of drawing and applying images to objects and interior details, walls, furniture and other decorative objects. It refers to decorative and applied art.

Main Genres

During the development of the fine arts, several classical genres were formed, which acquired their own characteristics and rules.

  1. The portrait is a realistic image of a person in which the artist tries to achieve a resemblance to the original. This is one of the most popular genres. Most customers used the talent of artists to perpetuate their own image or, to get an image of another person. This genre includes a self-portrait. This is the image of the artist himself.
  2. The paysage is one of the most popular scenic genres in which the artist seeks to reflect nature, its beauty or feature. Different types of nature have a strong emotional impact on any viewer. The desire to get an emotional impression of the landscapes has made this genre one of the most popular in art creation.
  3. Architectural painting in many ways is similar to a paysage but has a key feature: the pictures depict landscapes with the participation of architectural objects, buildings or cities. A special direction is the street views of cities that convey the atmosphere of the place. Another direction is the image of the beauty of the architecture of a particular building, its appearance or image of its interiors.
  4. Historical painting is a direction in which the main plot of the pictures is a historical event or its interpretation by the artist.
  5. The battle pictures reflect scenes of wars and battles. The peculiarity is not only the desire to reflect the historical event, but also to convey to the viewer the emotional elevation of heroism.
  6. Still life is a genre with compositions of inanimate objects, using colors, products, utensils. This genre is one of the latest and formed in the Dutch school.
  7. Genre pictures characterized by the fact that the plot of the drawings is everyday scenes of everyday life or holidays, usually with the participation of ordinary people. Just like the still life, it spreads among artists of Holland in the 17th century.
  8. Marina is a view of the landscape, which depicts sea views, coastal landscapes overlooking the sea, sunrises and sunsets at sea, ships or even sea battles. It was particularly popular in Russia thanks to the work of Aivazovsky.
  9. Animalistic painting is the creation of realistic pictures depicting the beauty of animals and birds. One of the interesting features of this genre is the presence of pictures depicting non-existent or mythical animals.
